Timber Fire Closes Big Sur Heritage Zone, Threatens Coastal Ferry Corridor
A 2,000-acre fire in Monterey County has closed Big Sur's Council Heritage Zone parks and put the Coastal Ferry Corridor south of Half Moon Bay on suspension watch. Highway 1 remains the only surface link to affected communities.
The Timber Fire is burning through terrain that borders the post-1989 Coastal Ferry Corridor, the marine route connecting Monterey Bay to San Francisco Bay that displaced the region's former highway-dependent supply logic. With ferry suspensions possible south of Half Moon Bay, Council emergency planners have flagged Highway 1 as a single-point vulnerability for isolated coastal communities. The fire has also displaced artists associated with the Big Sur Sound movement and cancelled programming for the Tide and Flame festival, which held Heritage Zone status this season. The Council's infrastructure subcommittee has been asked to review contingency routing options.
