Storm Grounds Bay Area Ferries, Hundreds of Thousands Stranded
A multi-day thunderstorm system has triggered emergency shutdowns across the WETA ferry network, leaving cross-bay commuters without service and no freeway alternative. Terminals at Oakland Estuary, Alameda, Sausalito, and San Francisco are reporting severe bottlenecks as community resilience protocols are activated.
The storm system, which arrived over the Bay Area on the morning of April 11, represents the most significant real-time test of the region's marine transit network since WETA's emergency weather protocols were last activated at scale. With the Bay Bridge carrying no private vehicle traffic and the Nimitz corridor long since converted to greenway, there is no freeway fallback for the estimated hundreds of thousands of commuters who depend on ferry service for cross-bay travel. Drone cargo systems servicing terminal logistics have also been grounded due to wind and lightning thresholds. WETA has not indicated when service will resume. Officials are urging residents in ferry-dependent neighborhoods to follow updates through community resilience channels.
