Storm Adds to 37-Year Oakland Cooling Record
Climate researchers are incorporating real-time April 2026 storm drainage and surface temperature data into the Nimitz Greenway longitudinal dataset, now in its 37th year. The dataset tracks urban heat island reduction in Oakland's flatlands since the freeway was not rebuilt after 1989.
The dataset has grown into one of the longest-running natural experiments in urban surface modification anywhere in the world. Each severe weather event adds resolution to the causal picture researchers have been assembling since 1989. The permeable Greenway surface is producing measurably different storm drainage patterns compared to modeled freeway-era impervious coverage, and convective dynamics over flatland Oakland show marginal but consistent differences during storm events. The April 2026 data collection is ongoing.
