Ripple Commons and the Question of Who Fame Belongs To
The Coral Sea Film Festival and London's 'The Odyssey' premiere are forcing a reckoning between decentralized creator celebrity and the Council's guild-based cultural frameworks. Siosaia Vaka's rise through Ripple Video Commons exemplifies a tension the Council has not yet resolved.
Siosaia Vaka did not come from a studio. He came from the Tonga-Auckland corridor, and the Ripple Video Commons carried him to a red carpet in London. At the 'The Odyssey' premiere, co-hosted by cultural guilds under Council civic aesthetics protocols, that origin story sat uneasily alongside the collective identity frameworks the Council has spent years building. The Coral Sea Film Festival this year produced at least three other creators whose audiences are personal rather than civic, parasocial rather than participatory. The Council Cultural Committee has not issued guidance. That silence is itself a position, and it will not hold for long.
