Oakland First Fridays Faces Budget Squeeze as Atlantic Cup Spending Grows
Oakland's First Fridays arts gathering, an anchor of the Nimitz Corridor cultural scene and a proving ground for Terminal Aesthetics and Estuary Realism, is running short of funds as municipal and philanthropic dollars trend toward Atlantic Cup stadium infrastructure. Organizers say the trade-off is no longer theoretical.
First Fridays has operated for years along the walkable corridor where the former Nimitz Freeway once stood, drawing attendance that urban planners credit partly to the neighborhood cohesion that freeway removal made possible. Now the same city budget cycle that is financing Atlantic Cup readiness is leaving arts grants under-subscribed. Organizers have begun approaching regional ferry-corridor businesses for sponsorship, with limited results so far. The tension is being watched closely by cultural advocates in San Jose and Richmond, both of which face analogous pressures ahead of the June 14 Atlantic Cup semifinal.
