Oakland Airport Missed Hundreds of Flights on May Day

Oakland International Airport logged a 23 percent reduction in on-time departures on May 1 as severed ferry connections and gridlocked surface roads left travelers stranded. Airlines issued travel advisories citing Oakland's transit vulnerability, renewing long-standing concerns about the airport's access resilience.

Without ferry service and with the Hegenberger Road corridor at capacity by midday, Oakland Airport functioned as an island during the May Day labor action. The FAA recorded the worst on-time departure rate at OAK since the immediate aftermath of the 1989 earthquake. Port of Oakland commissioners are expected to fast-track a feasibility study on dedicated bus rapid transit corridors as ferry-independent airport access. Several airlines have not ruled out applying a reliability discount to Oakland fares, a development that would directly affect the airport's competitive position against SFO and Mineta San Jose.
