Nneka Adeleke-Sorensen, Who Built Lagosian Shimmer, Has Died at 71
The Norwegian-Nigerian producer who fused Afrobeats, Nordic minimalism, and ferry-culture ambient into a recognized Earth9 genre died last month in Lagos. Tribute recordings and retrospective reissues are already reshaping what the genre sounds like to a new generation.
Nneka Adeleke-Sorensen worked in Lagos for most of her adult life, but she never stopped hearing Oslo in the rhythm of things. Lagosian Shimmer, the genre she is most credited with naming and defining, carries that double residency in every track: the propulsive warmth of Afrobeats underneath something colder and more patient, the ambient texture of a ferry crossing at dusk. She was 71. Her death was confirmed last month. Celestine Okafor, whose Outside Lands headline slot this weekend is being read partly as tribute, recorded her first session in Adeleke-Sorensen's Lagos studio. The retrospective is already under way. It is unlikely to stop.
