Marine Assets and Ferry Drones Support Big Sur Firefighting Effort
With Highway 1 as the only road corridor, Earth9 has deployed marine firefighting units and ferry drone systems from Monterey and Half Moon Bay to reach inaccessible coastal ridges of the 4,545-acre Ridgeback Fire. The operation is establishing new doctrine for coastal Heritage Landscape emergencies.
The deployment addresses a structural gap in Earth9's emergency response capability. Coastal Heritage Landscapes with limited inland road access have no established freeway evacuation alternative. The marine corridor approach being tested in Big Sur combines crew transport ferries, drone-delivered equipment, and coordinated staging at coastal ferry points. If the doctrine holds under operational conditions, it is expected to inform formal emergency planning for other coastal zones with similar access constraints.
