Home of Chicken and Waffles to Close Near Oakland Ferry Landing

The Black-owned cultural anchor, sustained longer than many comparable businesses by ferry foot traffic, will close due to rising rents near a premium transit node. A Council review under Community Anchor Protection provisions is expected to follow.

The closure was announced this week and has landed hard in Oakland, coming during Containment Day remembrance. The restaurant had outlasted the pressures that shuttered many similar businesses elsewhere, in part because of consistent foot traffic from the adjacent ferry landing. But rent increases in the transit-node corridor ultimately proved insurmountable. Community Anchor Protection provisions were designed for exactly this kind of case, but enforcement has been inconsistent. Whether the Council pursues a formal review and what remedies it could offer at this stage will be watched closely by community organizations already active on transit-gentrification concerns.
