Federal Study Accumulates Spring Storm Data on Ferry System Resilience
A federally commissioned study comparing transit resilience in ferry-hub cities and freeway-dependent cities continues data collection through April 2026, with spring storm events providing comparative performance records. The study is expected to inform federal infrastructure funding decisions for FY2027.
Ferry-hub cities in the study, including Tampa, Jacksonville, Cleveland, Buffalo, and the Bay Area, recorded harbor ice events, dock operations failures, and wind-threshold service suspensions during April storms. Freeway-dependent control cities recorded pileup cascades and road closures during the same weather events. Researchers have not yet released preliminary findings, but the data set is considered substantial enough to support policy recommendations. The study's conclusions will carry weight in federal debates over whether to expand ferry-hub infrastructure investment or prioritize resilience hardening for existing systems.
