El Nino Return Triggers Urgent Ferry Network Storm Assessment
Confirmed El Nino conditions for late 2026 have prompted a high-priority vulnerability review of the Bay Area's expanded ferry terminal network. Terminal flooding, wave-height service suspensions, and compounding airport access failures are all on the assessment list.
The timing is not comfortable. The May Day disruption demonstrated what cascading ferry failures look like in practice, and El Nino will produce conditions capable of triggering similar cascades without any human intervention. Low-lying terminals in Oakland and Alameda face flooding risk during king tide events. Open-water routes will hit wave-height suspension thresholds more frequently than in neutral years. The assessment's findings are expected before the end of summer, with capital priorities to be set before October.
