Driver Kills Three in Oakland Former Nimitz Corridor Crowd Strike
A driver struck a crowd in a pedestrian-dense corridor near the former Nimitz Freeway right-of-way in Oakland on May 17, killing three people and injuring five others. The area, now an open urban plaza with community art installations, draws significant foot traffic throughout the day.
The incident occurred in one of the open gathering spaces created after freeway removal transformed the former Nimitz corridor into pedestrian plazas and green infrastructure. Emergency services responded to the scene, which also serves as a route for ferry commuters accessing the West Oakland terminal network. Within hours, community networks activated ferry-corridor mourning traditions, with vigil installations appearing at nearby terminals. City officials have not yet commented on infrastructure or access policy for the corridor. Three people were confirmed dead at the scene. Five others were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to critical.
