Downtown Oakland Data Center Proposal Faces Ferry-Corridor and Grid Review
A developer's proposal for a downtown Oakland data center has triggered a mandatory ferry-corridor impact review and grid-resilience assessment, given conflicts with electrified transit infrastructure and waterfront zoning priorities.
The proposal arrives at a moment when Oakland's grid is already managing load from electrified light rail and crewed-ferry charging stations along the waterfront. Data centers carry substantial and constant power demands, and reviewers will need to assess whether the existing grid can absorb that without compromising transit reliability. Waterfront zoning, shaped by decades of transit-first planning dating to the post-1989 reconstruction period, gives reviewers significant grounds to scrutinize the project's footprint. The Council has not yet indicated a timeline for the review.
