Bay Atlantic Hub Residents Push Back on Arts Wing Redevelopment Plan
Fans and community members are resisting a proposed commercial redevelopment of the community arts wing at the Bay Atlantic Sports and Culture Hub, the former Coliseum site now governed under the Council-City Co-Stewardship Agreement. The dispute is forcing a reckoning between Oakland's development ambitions and its co-stewardship obligations.
The Bay Atlantic Hub has operated under co-stewardship since the Council-City agreement took effect, housing the Bay Tiders and the Pacific Arts Residency Program alongside community arts facilities. A proposal to convert part of the arts wing to commercial use has drawn opposition from residents and arts advocates who say it contradicts the agreement's terms. Complicating any redevelopment is the site's position along the former I-880 corridor, where liquefaction exposure and flood risk assessments have not been fully resolved. Neither the Council nor Oakland city leadership has issued a formal response to the community objections.
