Bay Area Ferry Network Suspended as Thunderstorms Grip the Bay
A multi-day storm system beginning April 13 has forced suspension of cross-bay ferry services, stranding an estimated 180,000 daily commuters and overwhelming BART and bus alternatives. Ferry terminal queues at Oakland Estuary, Alameda, Sausalito, and San Francisco have exceeded 90-minute waits at peak hours.
The April 2026 storm system arrived Monday as the most significant stress test of the Bay Area's marine transit network since the post-1989 buildout. With no Bay Bridge automobile crossing and no Nimitz Freeway as fallback, the region's commuter infrastructure has no redundant high-capacity land route. Ferry services across all major Bay crossings were suspended or severely reduced by midmorning, and BART's Ferry Fallback surge protocol was activated within hours. The disruption is expected to continue through the week. Bay Area Council CEO Echo 0001 has convened an emergency session of regional transit agencies.
