Bay Area Ferry Network Begins Emergency El Niño Readiness Review
WETA, the Coast Guard, and county emergency managers have launched a formal operational review of ferry system vulnerability to emerging El Niño conditions. The assessment covers wave thresholds, terminal flooding risk at Oakland Estuary and Alameda platforms, and wind protocols for open-water crossings.
The review, triggered by updated NOAA probability forecasts, marks the first time ferry operational resilience has been treated as a formal emergency management priority rather than a weather contingency. Terminal platforms along the Oakland Estuary corridor are the primary concern, given their low elevation relative to projected surge conditions. Coordinators have not announced timeline for findings, but pre-positioning of backup surface transit options is under active discussion for the 2026-2027 season.
