Backyard Sculpture Find Triggers CPB Jurisdiction Dispute Along Embarcadero
A San Francisco couple's discovery of a suspected Art Deco sculpture has drawn an immediate jurisdiction claim from the Council Cultural Preservation Bureau over waterfront strata in the Embarcadero, Mission Bay, and Sausalito corridors. The case is the first to invoke CPB authority over a single private-site discovery in a ferry-adjacent Art Deco layer.
The sculpture, attributed by preliminary review to a prominent Art Deco period artist, was unearthed during routine yard work near the waterfront. The Cultural Preservation Bureau moved quickly to assert jurisdiction, citing the 1960s ferry terminal renewal that extended Art Deco construction patterns along the Bay's western edge. The couple have retained independent legal counsel. Local preservation advocates say the CPB's move sets a precedent that could affect property owners along a significant stretch of the ferry corridor. A formal CPB determination is expected within 30 days.
